Davido Biography

David Adedeji Adeleke professionally called Davido is a Nigerian singer, songwriter and record producer. Davido made his debut on the Nigerian music scene as a member of the now defunct music group, KB International. The release of his hit song “Dami Duro” earned him massive recognition, in Nigeria, and also internationally. The song was released as the second single off his 2012-released second studio album “Omo Baba Olowo”.


Davido achieved even more recognition when he won the highly coveted Next Rated award at The Headies in 2012. He has since followed that success up with various other hit singles. Some of them include “Skelewu”, “Aye”, “Gobe”, “The Money”, “Blow My Mind”, “Tchelete (Goodlife)”, “If”, “Fall”, to mention a few.

Davido’s music career has spawned several hits and two studio albums including “Omo Baba Olowo” and “A Good Time“. He founded the popular record label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW) in 2016, home to Nigerian stars, Mayorkun, Dremo, Peruzzi and more.


Davido made history when he became the first African artist to sell out the O2 Arena in London. In 2019, his song “Fall” became the longest charting Nigerian song in Billboard history.

Davido Early Life:

Davido was born David Adedeji Adeleke on November 21, 1992, in Atlanta, Georgia. He is son to business magnate, Adedeji Adeleke and Vero Adeleke (late) a former university lecturer. Davido is his father’s second-born son and the youngest of five siblings. His mother died in March 2003 when he was just 10 years old.

At age 16, Davido moved to Alabama, US to study Business Administration at Oakwood University. While in the US, he bought musical equipment and began making beats. He also began working with his cousins B-Red and Sina Rambo, during which the international act KB International was formed. Later on, he dropped out of Oakwood University to focus on his music career. He would later go on to earn a degree in Music at Babcock University after returning to Nigeria in 2011. He became the first graduate from the department of music in Babcock University, Ilishan Remo, Ogun State.

Davido Music Career:

Following his return to Nigeria in 2011, Davido began working on his debut album “Omo Baba Olowo“. The album explored elements of Afrobeats and Hip Hop. He worked with a number of producers on the project including Shizzi, Spellz, Dokta Frabz, Maleek Berry, Jay Sleek, GospelOnDeBeatz, Mr Chidoo, and Theory Soundz. The album also featured several notable names in the Nigerian music industry including Kayswitch, Naeto C, Ice Prince, 2 Baba (then, 2 Face Idibia), and his aforementioned cousins.

The album received generally negative reviews from critics due to its weak lyrics but was loved by fans. It spawned the hits “Back When” featuring Naeto C, “Dami Duro”, “Ekuro”, “Overseas“, and “All of You“. Later on, be released “Gobe”, “One of a Kind“, and the viral hit “Skelewu” in 2013. He also released “Aye” (2014) which became massive, “Tchelete (Goodlife)” featuring Mafikizolo, “Fans Mi” featuring Meek Mill (2015).

In 2015, he announced a new 20-track album “The Baddest” which never dropped even after he shared its cover art to social media. It is believed that his deal with Sony Music in 2016 altered plans for the album’s release.

In January 2016, he signed a record deal with Sony Music and founded his own label, Davido Music Worldwide (DMW). In July 2016, he signed a new deal with RCA Records. He released the “Son of Mercy” EP in 2016, featuring contributions from Simi, Tinashe and Nasty C.

After releasing the hit songs “If”, “Fall”, “Fia”, “Assurance”, “Like That”, and “Blow My Mind” featuring Chris Brown from 2017 to 2019, Davido released his second studio album “A Good Time” in 2019. The album received generally favourable reviews from critics, and received over 1 billion streams in 2020.

Davido Education:

Davido attended the British International School situated in Lagos. At age 16, he moved to Alabama, US to study Business Administration at Oakwood University. Davido dropped out of Oakwood University to pursue a career in music. In 2011, following his return to Nigeria, Davido agreed to honour his father’s wishes and enrolled at Babcock University where he graduated with a degree in Music in 2015. His father, Adedeji Adeleke paid the University to start a music department for an inaugural class of one student.

Davido Relationship

Davido dated Sophia Momodu, the cousin of veteran Nigerian journalist and politician, Dele Momodu. The relationship led to the birth of his first child, Imade Adeleke. The relationship also caused a feud between Davido and Dele Momodu which they resolved many years later.

His second publicized relationship with his American girlfriend, Amanda led to the birth of his second child, Veronica Adeleke in May 2017.

In 2017, Davido began dating Chioma Rowland. The relationship became highly publicized by the media in 2018 leading to a number of songs dedicated to Chioma by the Nigerian singer. The couple met during their time at Babcook University in 2012. She is rumoured to have skipped a whole session to be with the singer at the time.

The couple got engaged in 2019 and announced it by sharing photos from their marriage introduction on social media. In October, 2019, Davido and Chioma welcomed their first child together, a boy named David Adedeji Adeleke jr. He is also named Ifeanyi. A naming ceremony was held in the United Kingdom on November 9, 2019.


Davido previously resided in Lekki, Lagos with his fiancee, Chioma Rowland and son. In 2020, he revealed that they had moved to a new home in Banana Island (a very expensive residential area in Lagos, Nigeria) in an effort to have more privacy.

Several estimates have been released about Davido’s actual net worth. Fans believe he is worth over N30Bn due to the lyrics of the hit song “If”. However, the recent estimate of his worth is around $14m to $22m. This is based on various articles from 2019.

In May 2017, Davido was listed among Africa’s Top 10 Bankable Artists on Forbes Africa Magazine. He is one of the most talked about artists in Africa and has won so many awards including 2 BET Awards, 2 MAMAs, 2 MTV EMAs, multiple Headies awards and more.
